THE BIG DATA IMPERATIVE

A recent report from McKinsey & Company described the dawning of the Big Data age as the next frontier for innovation, competition and productivity. They assert that leaders in every sector will have to grapple with the implications of big data as the sheer scale, volume, variety and detail of data being captured by enterprises, is expected to fuel exponential growth for the foreseeable future. And they are not alone in their predictions. Gartner has predicted 650% growth in enterprise data over the next 5 years - 80% of which is expected to be unstructured data. Other industry sources have estimated that structured data is growing at 30-40% each year, whilst unstructured data is growing at anywhere between 65% and 200% per annum!

The amount of data being created by organisations all over the world is truly staggering - and without adequate processes, technologies and practices for warehousing and analysing this data, enterprises face competitive and operational annihilation. The ability to store, aggregate and combine data and then use the results to perform deep analysis that drives decision-making, is more than ever, a fundamental requirement for doing business - irrespective of industry, sector or company size. Failure to address the issue, is simply not an option.
