INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS

MDM: THE NEXT DECADE - GO EARLY, GO GOVERNANCE

Enterprise-level master data governance that spans the entire master data lifecycle (creation, promotion, archiving, . . . ) is extremely difficult to execute for both organisational and technical issues. Yet increasingly this is being mandated as a core deliverable of most large-scale MDM projects. Through 2011-12, both major systems integrators and boutique consultancies will focus on "productising" their data governance frameworks / methodologies while MDM software providers struggle to link upstream data governance processes with downstream MDM hubs. By 2012, all mega vendor MDM solutions will evolve from "passive aggressive data governance" mode to "active data governance" wherein they provide the capabilities to capture business rules which in turn are propagated into an MDM hub. This keynote will focus on a set of strategic planning assumptions facing IT organizations during 2011-12 and beyond by highlighting strategies for:

  • Kick starting "master data governance" as a prerequisite to phase 1 MDM programs
  • Partnering with service providers to get to the next level of data governance maturity
  • Planning for the next generation of MDM and data governance capabilities to provide "total" party view -- semantic databases, deep web search, etc.

PRODUCT EVALUATION CRITERIA & FIELD REPORTS FOR "TOP 15" MDM SOLUTIONS

Evaluating MDM solutions is comparable to purchasing your first home - too many new variables, lack of transparency in the pricing, and high pressure sales tactics. On top of this flux, IT executives have to contend with the marketing dogma of ongoing "stack wars" amongst the mega vendors. To cope during 2011-12, most large enterprises will focus on MDM by deploying a 3rd generation database-centric hub to deliver a panoramic customer /citizen/supplier view across multiple channels, business lines, and heterogeneous IT environments. Other "type A" organizations will undertake phase two of their MDM programs to either go enterprise wide with a single master entity (customer, product, or supplier) or endeavor to go "multi-entity" by adding a second master data domain to the scope. This session will focus on the "why" and "how" of MDM technical evaluations for both scenarios by providing insight into:

  • Understanding the pros and cons of the dominant architectural models and evaluation criteria - e.g. , pro-active data governance, identity resolution, hierarchy management, scalability, etc.
  • Assessing the vendor landscape - e.g. , registry, data hub, ultra-hub, EAI/EII, portals, SOA-based web services, data service provider, etc.
  • Applying a rigorous methodology to MDM product evaluations for both mega vendor solutions (IBM MDM Server, Informatica MDM, Microsoft Master Data Services, Oracle MDM, SAP MDM) and more pure play (DataFlux, IBI MD Center, Kalido, Software AG, Stibo, Teradata, TIBCO)

GETTING BOARD LEVEL BUY-IN FOR AN INTEGRATED DATA GOVERNANCE PROGRAM

At TNT Express’ Head Office in the Netherlands, there is an obvious requirement to continually improve the confidence and speed in the preparation of their decision making data. This requires simultaneous embedding of data governance principles, business support, a data stewardship framework, business controls and corresponding IT tools within the organisation. These are then used to address the issues associated with Master Data, Business Rules and Terminology. By carefully defining the scope of the program and targeting the easy benefits, early sponsorship can be achieved to facilitate proof-of-concept phases before embarking upon the full program.

Getting Board level buy-in to support and fund the initiatives requires developing both a layman’s & detailed guide to all aspects of Data Governance and these have to be customised for each Board member. Whilst differentiating enabling projects from change management issues is a further challenge, an overall consistency and coherence of the broader strategy has to be maintained.

This presentation explains how TNT’s integrated Data Governance program will deliver the primary objective of improving the quality of decision making data. Key aspects will include

  • Developing a layman’s guide to Data Governance
  • Obtaining Board level buy-in to fund the initiatives
  • Relating Data Governance processes to decision making processes
  • Proposing an integrated approach to implementing Data Governance
  • Identifying the dependencies between the deliverables

CASE STUDY - ANZ INSTITUTIONAL BANK

BUILDING A BUSINESS CASE FOR MASTER DATA MANAGEMENT IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY

Most banks around the world are facing a similar challenge when it comes to their Information: They do not understand the value of managing high quality Master Data, despite it being a major part of the business. In most cases they are unaware of the magnitude of the issue, let alone having a plan in place to tackle it. Yet companies survive, operate and produce their services to their customers, but when there is a disconnect between a business strategy and the means required to support it, business people can be faced with significant, avoidable workloads. In other words, it is possible to build a business case for better managing Master Data (but perhaps not call it that).

There are many reasons why senior management generally turn a deaf ear when discussing funding and backing for data governance or data quality improvements. These may include being fed the wrong arguments, inexperience, traditions or simply the complexity of the challenges faced. Perhaps they have never understood the value of good Data Quality with respect to how they operate. This talk will explore the successful efforts to make Master Data a top priority for senior management. We’ll draw upon the experience of Platon’s global banking organizations such as Swedbank, Nordea, ANZ Bank, Saxo Bank, Santander, Sparbank, Danske Bank and the many other Banks in our global MDM portfolio.

CASE STUDY
CREATING THE SINGLE CUSTOMER VIEW ACROSS A DIVERSIFIED ENTERPRISE

Suncorp, a diversified financial services group that offers general insurance, banking, life insurance and wealth management services,  has grown by merger and acquisition over the last 10 years, with two major acquisitions. The mergers and acquisitions resulted in customer data being held in 23 different source systems with a total of 23 million individual account records. The corporation, constantly engaged in marketing programs to drive new business, found it had more customer records than the entire population of Australia and it was widely believed that these marketing efforts were in fact driving cannibalisation between Suncorp brands.

Learn how Suncorp implemented a comprehensive IBM Initiate Master Data Service solution with the help of IBM,  to achieve a single view of the customer across the entire Suncorp portfolio, which helped identify the levels of internal cannibalisation of their brands which were happening, gain a comprehensive view of their customer’s investments and identify up-sell and cross-sell opportunities for increased revenue.

Monica Smith is currently the Senior Solution Architect in the Customer Domain for the Suncorp Group.  Monica has an IT career spanning over 20 years, in a variety of industries, with international and local organisations, in various roles.
Monica’s first taste of the importance of Customer data came with her first role at Suncorp Building Society , in the early 1990’s when it merged with Suncorp Insurance and Suncorp Finance, creating a need for a single customer view across the resultant entity. Her involvement continued through the amalgamation of customer data from Metway, GIO and the Promina Group though Suncorp’s continued strategy of merger and acquisition. A highlight has been the successful implementation of the CDI Hub for Suncorp, integrating customer data across the Suncorp Group.  This is a key enabler for Suncorp and is used as input into Customer Analytics, Campaigns as well as a Customer Data Quality Dashboard.

EXPERTS FORUM - INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION

BEST PRACTICES IN MASTER DATA GOVERNANCE

Moderator: Aaron Zornes Chief Research Officer, THE MDM INSTITUTE

Data governance is vital to success of MDM projects - both initially and ongoing. During 2011-12, enterprises will increasingly mandate that "no MDM program be funded without the pre-requisite master data governance framework". "Proactive data governance" that includes entire master data lifecycle will increasingly be mandated as a core phase zero or phase one deliverable of most large-scale MDM projects. Given the substantial investment required for MDM programs, co-dependence/synergy of MDM and data governance must be given close scrutiny - not only to contain costs, but also to ensure success. Beyond committees, councils and stewards, what is the real work to be done, who should do it and what is the impact if not done properly? This panel will focus the answers to such questions to help understand the relationship and dependencies between MDM and data governance by discussing:

  • Communicating to executive management why master data governance is essential as phase zero deliverable and determining initial ROI of such investments
  • Determining criteria for evaluating the currently marketed data governance capabilities of mega vendors, specialist vendors, and systems integrators/consultancies (forecasting the key capabilities to demand of such suppliers in next 12-18 months
  • Establishing metrics for measuring the success of an ongoing master data governance program

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

THE REAL BUSINESS VALUE OF MDM

Organisations around the world have managed master data for many years, yet the modern discipline of master data management (MDM) is still relatively new. While there are many advertised desirable outcomes, they are not all directly associated with creating value. So why would an executive undertake the task of implementing a comprehensive program to manage master data? Without quantifying the business value proposition of all the purported benefits, it is difficult to justify moving forward with the effort.

Join Saul Cunningham for a thought-provoking discussion of why organisations need to master their data, and what key deliverables can be achieved. They will discuss both the tangible, measurable benefits of MDM as well as the key metrics and KPIs required to maintain focus and build internal company momentum.
